Новости: Medical and statistical indicators of morbidity of servicemen of the Russian Navy (2003-2021) Part 2

August 4 (16), 2025 marks 220 years since the decision to create an independent governing body for the medical service of the Russian Navy. Military medical support for the fleet includes a set of measures taken to improve the combat effectiveness and optimize the performance of military specialists, maintain and strengthen health, prevent and diagnose diseases, and ensure their timely treatment and rehabilitation.

Part 1 of the monograph presents medical and statistical indicators of morbidity of the entire cohort of servicemen of the Russian Navy and servicemen serving by conscription. For example, it turned out that the average long-term level of general morbidity of the Russian Navy servicemen for 19 years (2003-2021) was 1186 ‰ with a share of 13.7% of the structure of all morbidity in the Russian Ministry of Defense, primary morbidity - 571.9 ‰ and 12.2%, the need for dispensary observation - 137.4 ‰ and 17.8%, hospitalization - 462.3 ‰ and 13.2%, days of work loss - 7311.4 ‰ and 16%, dismissal - 18.2 ‰ and 22.7%, mortality - 69.56 × 10¯5 and 12.7%, respectively.

The dynamics of the decrease in the levels of all registered types of morbidity in the last observation period is noted, with the exception of a slight increase in the level of primary morbidity. The most pronounced levels of morbidity were recorded among conscripts with the share of diseases often exceeding 50% of the structure, which was determined not only by the significant number of this cohort. As a rule, diseases among conscripts arose due to the insufficiency of the barrier functions of the draft commissions of military registration and enlistment offices.

Extreme conditions of professional activity of military personnel create increased risks of health disorders or even death. At the same time, it turned out that the average annual level of general morbidity over 10 years (2012-2021) of the cohort of servicemen of the Russian Navy was statistically significantly lower (p < 0.001) than the adult population of Russia of working age - (1039.3 ± 29.0) ‰, respectively, primary morbidity - (577.4 ± 9.9) ‰ and (574.1 ± 8.5) ‰, respectively, i.e. almost identical indicators, the mortality rate from 2003 to 2021 is 13.9 (!) times lower (p < 0.001) - 68.60 ± 3.81) 10¯5 and (959.5 ± 43.34) 10¯5, respectively.

Publications on the study of the morbidity of Russian Navy servicemen serving under contract are few. A higher level of requirements for the health of Russian Navy contract servicemen is noted due to the increased risks of its violations during a sea voyage when performing tasks, where it is sometimes difficult to provide specialized assistance.

Let us list some publications that studied the risk factors for the occurrence of health disorders and presented an analysis of the incidence of all contract servicemen of the Russian Navy, including officers and warrant officers of the Russian Navy, sailors and petty officers serving under contract, female servicemen, a comparison of the incidence rates of servicemen of the Russian Navy Ground Forces, the Russian Navy and Ground Forces, the Russian Navy and the Russian Aerospace Forces.

As a rule, the development of morbidity up to 2016 was studied. Studies for a later period were not conducted, but they can become a reference when compared with the data on morbidity of military personnel participating in a special military operation.

The objective is to study medical and statistical indicators of morbidity among military personnel serving under contract, including officers and warrant officers, sailors and petty officers, female military personnel from 2003 to 2021 (peacetime), which will make it possible to clarify the necessary forces and resources of the medical service, and focus on prevention for leading classes of diseases and injuries.

From a practical point of view, the monograph is published in two parts: Part 1 contains medical and statistical indicators of morbidity of the entire cohort of servicemen of the Russian Navy and servicemen serving by conscription, Part 2 - indicators of morbidity of servicemen serving under contract, including officers, warrant officers, sailors and petty officers, female servicemen.
